BACTERIA IN SOIL

Bacteria are everywhere and they are vital to plant growth.

Even though bacteria are tiny they are among the earth's primary decomposers of organic matter second only to fungi.

They break down plant and animal matter in order in to ingest nitrogen, carbon compounds and other nutrients.

These nutrients stay safe inside the bacteria until its eaten or die and decay. then the nutrients is released (mineralised).

Anaerobic Bacteria

Anaerobic Bacteria survive and thrive with little oxygen and will gass off ( NASTY SMELL) all or most of the good nutrients and will dominate over good Aerobic Bacteria

Aerobic Bacteria

The Good Guys! Aerobic Bacteria are healthy bacteria for soil and need oxygen to survive and thrive.

Other microbial life forms that live in the

Soil Food web obtain their energy and nutrients by eating bacteria.

If there is not enough bacteria in the soil, populations of the soil food web suffer.

Bacteria are part of the base of the soil food web pyramid.
